Bauer Struggles in Debut, Rays pound Tribe 6-0

By:  Stephen Parsons

Trevor Bauer made his Cleveland Indians debut, but showed signs on why he did not make the 25 man roster out of spring training.  He walked 7 batters allowing 3 runs in 5 innings of work as the Tribe’s losing streak reached 3 games falling 6-0.

Bauer got a lot of help from his defense in this game, after walking Evan Longoria with the bases loaded, Ryan Raburn threw a runner out at the plate to end the 1st inning, limiting the damage at 1-0.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning Desmond Jennings stole 2 bases to get to 3rd base with nobody out.  Chisenhall charged on a groundball threw to Marson and a collision at the plate resulting in an out.  Marson took quite the shot as Jennings lowered his shoulder in a baseball, not dirty, kind of play.  His facemask and helmet flew into the air and the back of Marson’s head hit the ground.  Marson would show his toughness by not only holding on to the ball, but staying in the game.

Francona decided to take Marson out of the game just to be safe.  With Carlos Santana playing as the DH today, moving him back to catcher resulted in losing the DH spot.  This forces the pitcher to bat in the lineup for the remainder of the game.

Alex Cobb would baffle the Indians for the 2nd straight night of excellent Tampa Bay pitching.  Cobb went 7 1/3 innings allowing only 4 hits, walking 3 and striking out 6 Tribe hitters.  The Indians only got 5 hits tonight.  The Indians have scored more runs in their first loss of the season (8) then they have scored in the other 4 games combined (7).

My Thoughts:
The stat of the night again is batting with runners in scoring position, 0 for 5, leaving 6 runners on base.  Running into great pitching for the 2nd night in a row with timely hitting by Tampa Bay.  Honestly this game could have been much worse if the Tribe defense didn’t bail Bauer out early.  Bauer did not look good in his Indians debut and will likely head back down to Triple-A Columbus.  Someone in the middle of the lineup is going to have to step it up and come through in the clutch with runners on.

Coming Up Next:
The opposing pitching won’t get any easier tomorrow, reigning AL Cy Young Winner David Price takes the hill tomorrow against Justin Masterson in a battle of team aces.  Tampa Bay will be going for the sweep tomorrow as the Tribe will attempt to get back to .500 before returning home for the home opener on Monday against the New York Yankees.
