Hafner and Yankees Spoil Indians Opener 11-6

By:  Stephen Parsons

Opening Day in Cleveland is here, a 4-game series with the New York Yankees who have a depleted roster, then Travis Hafner said HEY GUYS, REMEMBER ME?  The Yankees bats came to play today pounding Indians pitching to a 11-6 win.

Travis Hafner came into this game batting .300 with a home run and 2 runs batted in the first week of the season.  In the 1st inning he made Ubaldo Jimenez pay with a 3-run home run putting the Tribe in an early 3-0 hole.

The Indians did respond quickly though, Michael Bourn walked, Asdrubal Cabrera singled, and Jason Kipnis hit a sac fly scoring Michael Bourn from 3rd base.  Nick Swisher singled and Michael Brantley singled, scoring Cabrera.  With Carlos Santana, the Tribe's hottest hitter coming to bat, Santana drew a walk to load the bases for Mark Reynolds.  Reynolds got under a pitch lifting it to deep left field to the warning track.  This fly ball resulted in Swisher scoring from 3rd base, tying the game at 3 a piece.

In the top of the 3rd, Robinson Cano led of with a double, Travis Hafner struck again with a single driving in Cano putting the Yankees back up 4-3.  In the top of the 4th Chris Stewart reached base on a 2-0ut single, then stole 2nd base off Ubaldo Jimenez setting up Brett Gardner with a 2 out rbi extending the Yankees lead 5-3.

The 5th would be Ubaldo's last inning of the game.  Robinson Cano again hurt him, this time with a solo home run.  After walking Travis Hafner, Matt Albers came into the game to relieve Ubaldo Jimenez.  Ichiro Suzuki would hit a single that would score Hafner putting more gas on the fire, Yankees now lead 7-3.

Robinson Cano started the top of the 6th with yet another solo home run.  In the 7th inning the Yankees would add on 3 more runs to give the Bronx Bombers a 11-3 advantage.

All hope was lost at this point, but in the bottom of the 8th, Mike Aviles hit a 2-run home run.  Michael Bourn then hit a triple, scoring on a wild pitch during the next at bat.  Indians were now suddenly down 11-6.

But that was as close as it got, Final score Yankees 11, Indians 6 as the Indians dropped their 5th straight home opener.  To make matters worse Carlos Santana left the game with a thumb contusion.  X-rays are negative and he is listed day-to-day.

Ubaldo Jimenez went 4 1/3 innings, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits, he struck out 4 and walked 3.  Allowing 2 home runs.

My Thoughts:
Pronk came back hitting well as he normally does in the month of April, he has hit 36 career home runs in the month of April, and has more hits this month than any other month in his career.  Runners in scoring position, Yankees hit 5 for 12, Indians hit 2 for 11.  Kuroda weathered the storm of throwing over 30 pitches in the 1st inning, and getting into the 6th inning.  It was good enough for his first win of year, good job by him.  At the end of the day, no matter how bad a showing, it goes down as one loss, come back tomorrow and even up the series.

Coming Up Next:
Carlos Carrasco makes his season debut against veteran Andy Pettitte tomorrow night at Progressive Field.  First pitch is at 7:05 PM.
